Walmart Canada decides to close Cedarbrae Mall store in Scarborough

The Walmart store at Cedarbrae Mall — that shopping centre’s central anchor — will close on Jan. 31, Walmart Canada has confirmed.
The company said that no employee jobs would be lost.
“Every single associate at this store will be offered comparable positions within the Walmart family,” Anika Malik, Walmart Canada’s director of corporate affairs, promised in a statement to Metroland Media.
“This decision is not a reflection of this outstanding group of associates who through their hard work and commitment have supported our customers and the community.”
Walmart Canada said that the store lease at 3487 Lawrence Ave. E. near Markham Road was up for renewal, and the company’s decision follows a review of Scarborough operations, which Malik said included factors at Cedarbrae such as “age of the building, concentration of stores and our overall ability to best serve our customers.”
Walmart Canada suggested Cedarbrae customers can visit its six other Scarborough stores at 300 Borough Dr. in Scarborough Town Centre, 3850 Sheppard Ave. E. in Agincourt Mall, at 1900 and 3132 Eglinton Ave. E., and at 5995 Steeles Ave. E. at Markham Steeles Crossing.
Management of the mall — owned by First Capital — said the space will be filled by new tenants, but no further information was available.
